I am an experienced Unix system administrator (4 years) with specialisation in Linux but extensive experience with FreeBSD, and some with Solaris. I am familiar with choice, configuration and administration of standard services on these platforms, especially:

• DNS, with bind 4 and 8 (for cacheing servers, zone masters and slaves, zone delegation, and full PTR on CIDR IP ranges);
• NNTP, primarily using inn (for a news transit and reading server, with multiple segregated distributions);
• SMTP, primarily using exim (for virtual domains and custom filter and transport configuration);
• POP3/IMAP servers;
• HTTP, with apache and mod_perl (including virtual domains and mod_ssl);
• Samba as client or server, including file and print sharing and authentication;
• Databases (mostly MySQL and PostgreSQL, some Sybase and Oracle);

I am a competent Perl developer (8 years): I have a solid grasp of this language and use it for many day-to-day system administrative tasks, as well as in CGI scripting, database interfacing (though DBI, primarily with MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle, with some exposure to Sybase), graphical interfaces with Perl/Tk, and other areas.

I have extensive experience of setting up secure systems with Linux (minimal services, patching software when needed), of constructing packet-filtering firewalls with Linux (ipfw, ipchains, ipfilter), of writing secure applications in Perl, and of intrusion detection and response (automated, using snort, and manual). My exposure to commercial firewalls has been limited to the WatchGuard system.

I develop and maintain the Thoth network monitoring system, and have extensive experience in the field of system and service monitoring.

Technical background is ISP sysadmin (8 years), Perl web development and sysadmin (8 years), consultancy on all of the above (10 years).
